Many of us learn to divine, dowse, or seek answers from a source that’s inside us and yet greater than ourselves: our Higher Self. When our conscious mind relaxes sufficiently, and our subconscious mind is aligned with our Higher Self, we have access to a tremendous source of wisdom.
I have used a simple method when I’m in a public place, to check whether a piece of food will either benefit or weaken my body. I stand up straight, holding the food in both hands and ask the question: “Will this food benefit me?” Swaying forward signifies yes; backward signifies no. Others muscle test themselves by holding the thumb and forefinger of their right hand interlocked with the thumb and forefinger of their left hand. When the circles hold following a question, the answer is “yes”; when they break, the answer is “no.”
My favourite method of divining is with the use of a pendulum. You can select a pendulum from a metaphysical store or a crystal store or even make your own with what you find in a bead or jewellery store. The best chain length is about 8 or more inches. Make sure the pendulum swings well by asking a couple of simple questions to which the answer is “yes” right there in the store.
When using a pendulum, it’s important first to cleanse, dedicate and pre-program it. Cleansing can be as simple as holding your pendulum under running water that alternates three times between warm and cool, then leaving it overnight where the light of early morning will bring it fresh energies. Store it between uses in a jar of dry sea salt; the salt will continue to absorb away any negative energies. Your pendulum is only for your use; if someone else uses it, make sure you cleanse it of their energies once again.
Next, your ability to divine from your Higher Self will benefit from dedicating your pendulum to the highest use. Light a white candle, and, holding your pendulum in both hands, say the following:
I call upon Divine Love, Light and Truth to dedicate the use of this pendulum for all time to assist me in accessing my own Inner Wisdom through my Higher Self, in full alignment with the highest good of all. Let all information come from my Higher Self and let there be no interference from lower energies. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Pre-programming your pendulum is simple. The various swinging responses can be in a clockwise circle, an anticlockwise circle, back and forth, and sideways. Ask your pendulum to show you its signal for “yes,” for “no,” and for “undecided.” Write these down. For me, “yes” is a clockwise spiral; “no” is a back-and-forth swing. Then build your confidence by asking the pendulum a number of questions to which you already know the answer, such as your name, age, address, hair colour, etc. Ask some questions to which the answer is “yes,” and others for “no.” Write these down and date what you have done.
Prior to each divination session, connect with your Higher Self intentionally by creating a sacred space, lighting a white candle, breathing deeply to settle yourself and saying something like the following:
I call upon Divine Love, Light and Truth to assist me in accessing my own Inner Wisdom through my Higher Self, in full alignment with the highest good of all. Let all information come from my Higher Self and help me trust and know that all information comes from Divine Source. Let my conscious mind be relaxed, open and receptive. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Continue to build your confidence over a couple of weeks by asking the pendulum questions to which you already know the answer and some to which you do not know the answer. Your skill and your confidence in your ability to divine will increase.
It’s best not to ask the same questions repetitively – that shows that you doubt the answer and can lead to confusing responses. An example of this for me was when I maintained the habit of checking my pendulum’s programming every time I divined. One day, the pendulum answered with opposite responses and that completely confused me: “yes” became an anti-clockwise spiral; and the chain just shivered for “no.” I intuited quite soon that it wasn’t necessary for me to keep checking my pendulum’s response. And I haven’t asked for that confirmation since.
The same advice holds for questions. If you feel you may have asked the question in an ambiguous way, then clarify the answer by asking its opposite or something else, and then see how the response changes.
Here’s an example for this might be.
“Is it in alignment with my highest path and purpose to attend this talk on ….?” “Yes.”
“Is it in alignment with my highest path and purpose to attend this talk because of the subject matter?” “No.”
“Is it in alignment with my highest path and purpose to attend this talk because of who I will meet there?” “Yes.”
The clarity of your questions will have direct bearing on the clarity of the information you receive. Ask just one question in each sentence. In other words avoid the use of an either/or question. How could the pendulum respond to that? Also, the words “should” or “must” or “ought” serve to bring answers that tell us what to do. Our Higher Self does not tell us what to do: it guides us and helps us know what is in alignment with the path – the life plan – that we created for ourselves before we incarnated into this life.
I first learned about divining from Andrea Hess’s book: Unlock Your Intuition. It’s a very thorough treatise on the subject and really got me going along this productive path. For a while Andrea made the first chapter of her book available as a free pdf download. If you search on google, you may find it.
Each of us has the ability to divine, because each of us has a Higher Self, waiting to assist us. If and when you are ready to start consciously working with your Higher Self, divining is one avenue that provides a wonderful connection. I shall write more about connecting with Divine Source for information more in later posts.
